Associate Director of Strategy, Planning and Governance

The British Museum is seeking an experienced strategic leader to join its senior team as Associate Director of Strategy, Planning and Governance, helping to shape the future of one of the world’s leading cultural institutions during a major period of transformation.
About the role
Based at the British Museum in Bloomsbury, London, the Associate Director of Strategy, Planning and Governance will work closely with the Museum’s senior leadership team and Board of Trustees to develop and deliver its organisational strategy.
The successful candidate will lead strategy, business planning and governance across the Museum, ensuring organisational priorities are translated into clear objectives, programmes and measurable outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the development and delivery of the Museum’s organisational strategy
- Overseeing annual and multi-year business planning across all directorates
- Acting as Board Secretary and supporting the Board of Trustees and its committees
- Establishing and maintaining strategic performance reporting
- Providing senior leaders and Trustees with insight into progress against organisational objectives
- Leading and developing governance and information governance teams
- Supporting effective risk management, compliance and organisational accountability
- Helping the Museum navigate a significant period of organisational change and redevelopment
The appointment comes as the British Museum undertakes the biggest transformation in its nearly 300-year history, encompassing major building and gallery redevelopment, new approaches to audience engagement and changes to how the organisation works.
About you
The British Museum is looking for an accomplished strategic leader with experience in governance, policy, strategy or corporate planning within a complex organisation.
Candidates should have:
- Experience working effectively at executive and board level
- A strong track record of influencing senior stakeholders
- Excellent judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience producing high-quality reports, papers and briefings
- The ability to build productive relationships across diverse teams
- Strong people management and leadership skills
- A collaborative and resilient approach to organisational change
Experience within the public, charity, cultural or heritage sectors would be advantageous.
