Gardens of Golden Gate Park
is seeking an experienced Managing Director of Live Experiences to lead the planning and delivery of events and public programming across one of San Francisco's most celebrated public spaces. This senior leadership role will oversee the organisation's live experiences strategy, creating engaging events that connect communities with the gardens while supporting long-term growth and sustainability.

About the role

The Managing Director of Live Experiences will provide strategic and operational leadership for the organisation's live events portfolio, overseeing the development, delivery and continued growth of experiences across the Gardens of Golden Gate Park.

Working closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership team, the successful candidate will develop innovative programming that enhances visitor engagement, generates earned revenue and strengthens community partnerships. The role combines creative vision with operational excellence, ensuring events are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

The Managing Director will also lead cross-functional collaboration with internal teams, external partners, artists, vendors and stakeholders, helping position the Gardens as a vibrant destination for cultural, educational and community experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic vision and operational delivery of live experiences and public events.
  • Develop an annual programme of engaging, high-quality visitor experiences.
  • Oversee event planning, production, logistics and operational delivery.
  • Build partnerships with artists, performers, community organisations and sponsors.
  • Manage budgets, contracts and financial performance across the live experiences programme.
  • Lead, mentor and develop the live experiences team.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety and event regulations.Monitor programme performance and identify opportunities for growth and innovation.

About you

The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with a strong background in live events, cultural programming, visitor attractions or destination management.

You will likely bring experience in:

  • Leading large-scale public events and festivals.
  • Developing visitor-focused programming.
  • Managing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Budget planning and commercial performance.
  • Building strategic partnerships and stakeholder relationships.
  • Event operations, logistics and risk management.
  • Delivering memorable guest experiences within cultural or nonprofit organisations.

You will be a collaborative leader with excellent communication skills and a passion for creating experiences that inspire and engage diverse audiences.
